Omega 3
October 2001

Q. What are the health benifits taking Omega 3 supplements? What are the pros and cons?

A. Omega 3 fatty acids are a natural component of fish in the diet. They are particularly found in rich fish such as salmon or herring. The omega 3 fatty acids have received a lot of interest as a heart-healthy fat in the diet, as regular intake tends to lower cholesterol and triglycerides in the bloodstream. Several studies have shown regular fish intake to be beneficial, but similar studies on supplements of omega 3's have not been done. Ask your doctor if these might be to your benefit.
