Unexplained Lump
July 2003

Q. I found a lump on my left arm. I work in a nursing home and one of the nurses informed me that it was a broken blood vessel. What is the self help for this? Should I see my doctor?

A. If the lump appeared rather suddenly, it could well be a broken blood vessel. A growth on or under the skin would likely be slow to develop. A broken blood vessel can occur with minor trauma and should go away without treatment in a week or two. If you are having pain or other symptoms, a visit to your doctor would clarify the issue.
