Eye Twitch
May 2002

Q. My left lower eye lid has a constant spasm (twitch) that is very noticeable. Is there any medication that I can take to stop this?

A. This is not an infrequent problem, though it is rarely anything of consequence. It is usually related to eye muscle fatigue or stress. Your doctor will likely perform an eye exam, and possibly a few basic blood tests. If other muscles are misbehaving, a consultation with a neurologist can be sought.

Identifying contributing factors will lead to appropriate treatment. If you work on a computer, or other work that requires intensive use of the eyes, a careful vision exam and eyeglass prescription is of prime importance.
