Brown Skin Patches
November 2000

Q. My Mother will be 83 in December. She has small brown patches on her arms and legs that sometimes look scabby. She will not see a doctor because she does not like quacks. Could you help me put my mind at ease or get her to see the doctor?

A. It is really impossible to say what the brown scabby patches are without looking at them. They could be anything from a type of benign skin inflammation (dermatitis), or fungus, all the way to a type of skin cancer. Although I can see your Mom's point that nobody likes "quacks", it would be prudent to get her to see a dermatologist if possible.

Good luck.
