Stem Cell Research
July 2000

Q. Please comment on stem cell research and its potential to regenerate diseased organs. Do you have any resources for further information?

A. Stem cell research is a very complex issue. Stem cells are very immature cells (undifferentiated) that are derived from human embryos. When cultured, the stem cells have the potential to develop into any given organ. Obviously this technology could have immense benefit in being able to replace various diseased organs. This could cure most diseases. However, there are significant legal and ethical issues that have to be addresses before this technology can be implemented. Please see the cited reference for more details.
